WHO IS TOGETHER WE PAINT?

TOGETHER WE PAINT and our sister project, HELPING HAMMERS are efforts made by  conscious companies who care enough about their communities to fund a series of volunteer community beautification and improvement projects.

WHO IS TAKING THE LEAD ROLE?

TOGETHER WE PAINT and HELPING HAMMERS are spearheaded by the 56 Credit Unions of Arizona, each contributing necessary financial and volunteer resources to improve the lives of those in need.

WHO ELSE HELPS WITH SUPPORT?

REVERSE MORTGAGES USA, a leading Arizona reverse mortgage company is providing substantial financial support to help those in need.

HOW MANY SITES WILL BE IMPROVED?

TOGETHER WE PAINT along with our sister project, HELPING HAMMERS,  will paint, repair, or improve more than 100 homes owned by low-income seniors, disadvantaged families; schools, and community buildings throughout Arizona.

WHAT KIND OF IMPROVEMENTS?

Many will receive an exterior makeover, a complete painting of their home or building, including trim and accents.

Others will receive much needed home repairs and improvements, such as wheelchair ramps, doors, windows, electrical, plumbing, heating/AC, safety issues, etc.

IS THERE A CHARGE?

There is absolutely no charge to the homeowners, school districts, or non-profit community buildings

in need for these improvements.  All of the necessary funding for the TOGETHER WE PAINT and HELPING HAMMERS projects is provided by our funding partners, led by all of the 56 Credit Unions of Arizona and Reverse Mortgages USA!  Most of the work is completed by thousands of volunteers!

HOW DO I NOMINATE SOMEONE?

You may nominate a family member, friend, neighbor, or yourself to receive these free services.   Click here to NOMINATE on line or click here to request an application be sent to you or directly to the person in need.

HOW DO I KNOW WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

Homeowners who are at least 62 years of age, homeowners who are permanently disabled, and (for our JUNTOS PINTAMOS project, homeowners who are of Hispanic origin) are given highest priority, providing their household income below 150% of current federally mandated guidelines as registered by the Department of Health and Human Services.

Other factors that determine selection include

health issues, short-term and long-term disabilities, size and manageability of volunteers painting the home (single story, etc.), location, and other variables.

WHAT ARE THESE INCOME GUIDELINES?

The 2008 Poverty Guidelines as published by the HHS are as follows:

Persons in                          Household Income

Household                          150% POVERTY

   1                       15,315

   2                       20,535

   3                       25,755

   4                       30,975

   5                       36,195

   6                       41,415

   7                       46,635

   8                       51,855

Add for each

adt'l person                   5,220

WHAT IF MY INCOME IS ABOVE THESE LEVELS?

You may still be eligible!  Priority is given to those whose HH Income is below or close to 150% of poverty.  However, because local companies fund the TOGETHER WE PAINT and HELPING HAMMERS projects, there is more flexibility than those programs funded by government grants.

DO YOU CONSIDER HH NET WORTH?

Rarely do we consider Household Net Worth.  Monthly income is given a much higher priority

since many seniors and those who are disabled may have savings or equity, but they would feel unsafe if they were required to decrease their nest-egg.

WHEN ARE THE DECISIONS MADE?

We are now accepting applications and will continue to through June, 2008.  Each homeowner or building manager will be sent a Qualification Form which is required to be completed and returned by July 15, 2008.  A local advisory board in each area will determine the homes and sites to be improved.  Decisions for TOGETHER WE PAINT and JUNTOS PINTAMOS should be made by September 15, 2008.  Decisions for HELPING HAMMERS should be made by December 15, 2008.

WHEN IS THE WORK COMPLETED?

For the fall 2008 series, most of the exterior painting makeovers that are part of TOGETHER WE PAINT are done on Saturdays with the next series of projects scheduled for October, 2008.

HELPING HAMMERS repairs and improvements are completed by January 2009 on weekends or weekdays during the months of November and December 2008, and January 2009.

WHAT IF I CAN'T WAIT FOR REPAIRS?

If you are unable to wait until January, 2009 to get help, we would suggest that you contact other government funded agencies or charities that may be able to provide help sooner.  There should be  listings in your local phone book.

WHAT ABOUT SCHOOLS AND BUILDINGS?

Most schools and buildings are adopted by local companies having a desire to provide funding and volunteer support for a specific public school, day-care center, youth center, senior center, or other community building.

These buildings must be owned by the organization seeking help, or have a secure long-term lease to stay in the building for at least three years following completion of work.

Most of the schools and community buildings are located in low-income neighborhoods and lack financial support to improve the building on their own.

HOW CAN I NOMINATE A HOMEOWNER IN NEED?

Click here to nominate on-line or click here to request an application be sent to you or directly to the person in need.

HOW CAN I NOMINATE A SCHOOL OR COMMUNITY BUILDING?

Click here and write a letter describing the school or building in need.  We also ask that you e-mail photos and other detailed information directly to nominate@togetherwepaint.org.

CAN I VOLUNTEER TO HELP?

Of course.  We are now accepting painting volunteer applications.  Click here to volunteer.

Also, if you have a special skill or trade (ex: electrician, plumber, etc.), we would love to hear from you too.

CAN MY COMPANY BE A SPONSOR?

Yes, most likely.  We are always seeking companies to adopt homes, schools, or community buildings.  Click here for sponsorship information.

Carolyn opened her day-care center six years ago, serving low-income parents and children.  The center is open through 2am every day, because many of the parents work different shifts, or work two jobs, to make ends meet.  About 98% of the children are being raised by single moms, or in many cases, aunts or grandparents. She makes sure they eat at the center, because often those are the only meals they will eat...

Joan, 62, was widowed in 1983 when her husband died at age 40.  He had been diagnosed with Melanoma and given five years to live.  When he went back for a check-up and found out he had massive brain tumors, he was then told he had no more than seven months.  That was in November.  He died the following February.  Joan was then left with two children, ages seven and 10...
